Scott Mingus, Sr. is both scientist and historian.
It has become a familiar site around Adams and York Counties to see him tramping through near-forgotten battlefields. You might see him haunting the reading rooms of libraries and various historical societies sifting through long-ignored records, muster roles, letters and diaries. Or exploring dusty archives in search of that one elusive tid-bit of historical import.
His most recent work, Flames Beyond Gettysburg, details the expedition of Confederate General John B. Gordon at the onset of the Gettysburg campaign. Gordon’s command passed through Gettysburg, Hanover and York as it attempted to secure the bridge at Wrightsville. That would have brought the rebellion to Harrisburg and, perhaps, Philadelphia. The people, the places, the incidents are retold bringing fresh insight and context to this overlooked aspect of Lee's invasion.
His other titles put a human face on the horrors of the Civil War, retelling incidents from the battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg, helping the modern reader appreciate the confusion of the battlefield and the realities of life--and death--during the war.
